Sotheresearchersforthelateststudywenttothecats’homesandplayedrecordingsofdifferenttypesofspeechanddifferentspeakers.Atfirst,Dr.deMouzonandherteamwereworriedthatthecatsweren’treactingatall.Butthentheystudiedfilmrecordingsoftheencounters.“Theirreactionswereverysubtle,”Dr.deMouzonsaid.“Itcouldbejustmovinganearorturningtheheadtowardsthespeakerorevenfreezingwhattheyweredoing.”

Inafewcases,thecatsinthestudywouldapproachthespeakerplayingavoiceandmeow.“Intheend,wehadreallycleargainsinthecat’sattentionwhentheownerwasusingcat-directedspeech,”Dr.deMouzonsaid.

Thefindingsshowedthat“catsarepayingcloseattentiontotheircaretakers,downtonotonlywhattheyaresaying,buthowtheyaresayingit,”saidKristynVitale,anassistantprofessorofanimalhealthanbehavioratUnityCollegeinMainewhowasnotinvolvedinthenewstudy.
