servingrapidlychanging,fragmentingmarketshavebeenattemptingtopushbeyondthe
increasinglymanifestlimitationsofthemass-productionsystem.Theyhavebeenveryslow,
however,toappreciatehowfundamentalarethedifferencesbetweentraditional
mass-productionmarkets,thatis,massmarketsforuniformproducts,andhigh-volume
nichemarketsforindividualizedproducts.Thisdifferenceisparticularlymarkedwhenthe
primaryvalueofphysicalproductstothecustomeristheirdeliveryofservicesoraccessto
information.
Theabilityofcompaniestofragmentmarkets,tobuildtoorderinarbitrarylotsizes,
towidentheirproductrangesandchangemodelsfrequently,tocustomizemass-market
products,andtomarketinformationhasunderminedthecompetitivenessofthe
mass-productionsystem.Theacquisitionoftheseabilitiesisanexpressionofindustry
“backinginto”agility,unwittingly.
Thevisionofagilitythathasbeendevelopingduringthepastthreeyears,ontheother
hand,isthatofadeliberate,competitiveresponsetotheconstantlychangingmarkets.Asa
comprehensivesystem,agilitydefinesanewparadigmfordoingbusiness.Itreflectsanew
mind-setaboutmaking,selling,andbuying,anopennesstonewformsofcommercial
relationshipsandnewmeasuresforassessingtheperformanceofcompaniesandpeople.
