“Mandarinislikeakey,helpingmetoopenthedoortounderstandChina,”shesaid.PompaweedevelopedalovefortheChineselanguageattheageof13.Whenshewasinhighschool,shemadeanimportantdecision-learningMandarinatcollege.Now35-year-oldPompaweehastaughtMandarinforover10years.

PompaweevisitedChinaforthefirsttimewhileshewasintheuniversity.ShefoundChinesefoodsogreat.BeforetravellingtoChina,PompaweehadonlyheardofafewChinesedishes,suchashotpotandjiaozi.Shewasamazedbythekinds,thetastesandtheChinesewaysofcooking.“Chinesepeopleareverykindtoforeigners.DuringmyfirstvisittoChina,myChinesefriendsandtheirfamiliesalwaystookgoodcareofmeandkeptaskingwhetherIwasusedtothelife,”sherecalled(回忆).
