Itisnoticeablethatinbothyears,2000and2010,themajorityofBritishstudentsattheuniversityinquestionwereabletospeakatleastoneotherlanguage.Wecanalsoseeanincreaseintheproportionofsecondandthirdlanguagespeakersoverthe10-yearperiod.
Intheyear2000,80%ofthestudentswereabletospeakoneortwoforeignlanguages,and20%onlyspokeEnglish.Tenyearslater,therewasariseof5%intheproportionofthosewhospokeasecondlanguage.Therewasalsoanincrease,from10%to15%,intheproportionofstudentswhowereabletospeaktwoforeignlanguages.
Lookingatthespecificsecondlanguagesspoken,in2000,30%ofthestudentswereabletospeakSpanish,15%spokeFrench,and10%spokeGerman.By2010,theproportionofSpanishspeakershadrisento35%,therewere5%fewerFrenchspeakers,andthefigureforGermanspeakersremainedatoneinten.Finally,wecanseethatthepercentageofspeakersofothersecondlanguages,apartfromSpanish,FrenchandGerman,rosefrom15%to20%overtheperiodshown.
