Atotalof23spottedseals(斑海豹)wereputbackintothewatersoffthecoastofDalianinNortheastChina’sLiaoningProvinceonTuesday,Dec.12,2023aspartofChina’scontinuouseffortstoprotectendangeredwildlife.

Thesealswerehuntedandsold,buthavenowbeensavedandmarkedforfutureprotection.AfisherylawenforcementshiparrivedattheseaareanearDalianinthemorning,carryingthespottedseals.Thesealswereletgofreeonebyoneintothesea.Theyswamfreelyinthewater,returningtotheirnaturalhome.;SpottedsealsarenationallyprotectedanimalsinChina.Theyaretheonlykindofsealsthatcanbreed(繁殖)inChinesewaters.Likemigratory(迁徙的)birds,theyappeararoundOctobereveryyearinLiaodongBay,andtakethelongjourneybacktotheNorthwestPacificinMayafterbreeding.Theyareoftenconsideredasthe“pandaofthesea”.

ThankstoChina’stop-classnationalprotectioninrecentyears,thepopulationofspottedsealsinChinesewatershasreachedaround2,000,whiletheglobalpopulationisbetween400,000and600,000.Studieshaveshownthatthese2,000spottedsealsareofgreatimportanceforthestudyandresearchonspottedseals.;Toprotectthisrareanimalanditsecologicalenvironment,theLiaoningDalianSpottedSealWetlandsweresetupin1992.InJanuary2002,theywereincludedintheListofWetlandsofInternationalImportance.Coveringanareaof560,000hectares(公顷)withacoastlineofabout370kilometers,thewetlandsarerichinbiologicalresources.Theyhavebecomehometonationallyprotectedanimalssuchasthespottedseal,finlessporpoise,killerwhales,falsekillerwhales,commondolphins,bottlenosedolphins,andEastAsianriverdolphins.

Since1992,researchersinDalianhavesuccessfullysaved388spottedsealsandput299ofthembackintothewild.;_______________________________________________________________
