thatI’mfromBhutan.Bhutanisasmallcountry—highintheHimalayaMountains—between
India
andChina.Inourlanguage,BhutanisknownasDrukYul,whichinEnglishisland,landofthe
thunderdragon.Thedragonisevendisplayedonourflag.Formanyyears,mycountrywas
isolatedfromtheworld,partlyduetoitsgeography—it’ssurroundedbyhighmountains—but
alsobecauseofgovernmentpolicies.
Ourgovernmenthadalwaysbeena,anabsolutemonarchy,Imean,governmentheadedbya
kingwithunlimitedpower.Anyway,untilveryrecently,Bhutanhadnoelectricity,nocarsor
trucks,notelephones,andnopostalservice.YoumaybesurprisedtolearnthatinBhutanpeople
haveonlyhadtelevisionsince1999.ItwasthelastcountryonEarthtogetit.Youmaybe
wondering:WhydidBhutanrejectthemodernworldforsolong?
Well,thegovernmentwastryingtoprotectthepeoplefromnegativeinfluencessuchashigh
crimerates,youthviolence,andpollution.Butthekinghasadmittedthatthepolicyofisolation
hadmanynegativeconsequences.Forexample,theeducationsystemdefinitelyfellbehind.Some
peopleneverlearnedtoreadandwrite.Then,oneofourkingsbeganopeningupBhutantothe
outsideworld,andourcurrentkinghascontinuedtheprocess.Therearenewroads,schools,and
healthclinics.Thekingdoesn’twanttoopenupthecountryallatoncetotheoutsideworldand
riskruiningit.Hewantsourcountry’sdevelopmenttobeguidedby,nowletmethink,oh,yes,
GrossNationalHappiness.
