1.Introduction

TheteachingofEnglishinhighschooliscrucialforstudents

languageacquisitionandcommunicationskillsdevelopment.In

recentyears,therehasbeenagrowingemphasisondesigning

Englishunitsbasedonthememeaningtoenhancestudents

motivationandinterestinlearning.Thisresearchaimsto

examinetheeffectivenessofthisteachingapproachinhigh

schoolEnglishclassrooms.

2.LiteratureReview

PreviousstudieshaveshownthatorganizingEnglishunits

aroundacentralthemecanprovideamorecohesiveand

meaningfullearningexperienceforstudents(Brown,2017).By

connectinglanguagelearningtoreal-worldtopicsandissues,

studentsaremorelikelytoengagewiththematerialandretain

whattheyhavelearned.Additionally,thematicunitscanhelp

studentsmakeconnectionsbetweendifferentaspectsof

languageanddevelopadeeperunderstandingoflanguageuse

incontext(Richards,2019).

3.ResearchDesign

Forthisstudy,ahighschoolEnglishclasswasselectedto

participateinathematicunitonenvironmentalsustainability.

Theunitwasdesignedtoincorporateavarietyoflanguageskills,

includingreading,writing,listening,andspeaking,allfocusedon

thethemeofprotectingtheenvironment.Theunitincludeda

varietyofactivities,suchasreadingarticlesonenvironmental

issues,writingpersuasiveessaysontheimportanceof

conservation,watchingdocumentariesonclimatechange,and

engaginginclassdiscussionsonsustainablelivingpractices.

4.DataCollection

Datawascollectedthroughacombinationofpre-and

post-unitassessments,studentsurveys,classroomobservations,

andteacherreflections.Pre-unitassessmentswereusedto

gaugestudentspriorknowledg
