Theold1986truckwasagiftfromhisgrandfather.Itworked,butitusedalotofgas.IanCheneylookedathisgrandfather’struckandthoughtofafarm.Asinotherlargecities,thereisnotmuchspacetogrowfoodinNewYork.YetCheneywantedavegetablegarden.ManyfarmersinNewYorkhavefoundcreativewaystogrowvegetables,suchasrooftopgardens,communitygardensinoldparkinglots,andevenafloatinggardenintheHudsonRiver.Cheney,however,didn’thaveaccesstoanyofthesespaces.Sotheoldtruckwasapracticalsolution.Thebackofthetruckprovidedhimwiththespaceheneeded.

SoCheneysettowork.First,hedrilledholesinthetruckbed—allowingwatertopassthrough.Thenhelaiddownarecycledplasticmat.Thesoilcamenext—aspeciallightweightvariety.Hemadesurethateverythingwasorganic.Cheneypreferredorganicbecausehewantedtogrowvegetableswithoutchemicals.Thenheplantedlettuce,herbs,spinach,andtomatoes.Finally,hewateredandwaited.

Whenthefoodwasreadytopick,Cheneydrovethetruckfromoneurbanneighborhoodtoanother.Hegaveawaysomeofthevegetables.Hesoldtheresttofriendsandneighbors.Everywhereheparked,passersbystoppedandtalkedaboutthebeautifulvegetablegardeninthebackofthetruck.

Cheneystronglybelievesthatpeoplearebetteroffeatingmorelocalfood—thatis,foodgrownclosetowheretheylive.Localfoodhasbothenvironmentalandhealthadvantages.Itreduces“foodmiles”.Thetermfoodmilesreferstothedistancebetweenwhereyouproducefoodandwhereyousellit.Alotofthefoodinlargesupermarketstravelshundredsofmilestogettoyourdinnertable.Thishasaneconomicandenvironmentalcost.Thenthereisthequestionofnutrition—foodthathelpsyougrowandbehealthy.Thenutritionalbenefitsofvegetablesdecreaseovertime.Soeatingfoodwithina
