Executivesummary:reportoverview

GridsforSpeed(GfS)isacomprehensiveexaminationofinvestmentsandenablersneededtoensurethatourgridsarefitandreadyforamoreelectrifiedsociety.

Failuretoinvestindistributiongridmodernisationwillstallmuch-neededconnectionsoftechnologies,suchasrenewables,heatpumpsandelectricvehicles(EVs).

Theanticipatedupsidesofreducedcarbonemissions,greaterenergyefficiencyandlowerenergybillsmaynotmaterialise,oratleastnotasquicklyastheworld

needs.GfSsetsoutsthevisionandframeworkforthedistributiongridtoachievetheenergytransitionby2050intheEU27countriesandNorway(EU27+Norway).It

scrutinisesthecriticalandsometimesunderestimatedroleofdistributiongridinfrastructureinacceleratingtheshifttowardssustainable,low-carbonenergysystems.

OurstartingpointisEurelectric’sREPowerEU2050scenario.DescribedinEurelectric’sDecarbonisationSpeedwaysreport,thescenariointegratesboththe

EuropeanCommission’sFitFor55andREPowerEUpolicypackages.InGfS,weevaluatethescaleofcapitalinvestmentneededto:

•Increasethedistributiongrid’scapacitytodeployrenewables

•Replaceageinginfrastructure

•Integrateadvancedtechnologiesforefficientgridmanagementandcontrol

Ouranalysisisinformedbydatafromdistributionsystemoperators(DSOs)servingmorethan60%ofEuropeanenergyusers.ItalsoincludesNationalEnergyand

ClimatePlans(NECPs),networkdevelopmentplans(NDP)andproprietaryEYdata.AnditismodelledbyEYandImperialCollegeLondon(ICL)throughto2050,using

ICL’sinternationallyacclaimedrepresentativegridmodellingmethodology.

Weidentifythekeyenablersthatmustbeinplacetodelivertherequiredinvestmentandspeedupgriddevelopment.Intermsofregulation,weconsider

adjustmentstothecurrentincrementalandbackward-lookingregulatoryframe
