Inapreviouspost,wedescribedthedetailsofNSynth(NeuralAudioSynthesis),anew

approachtoaudiosynthesisusingneuralnetworks.Wehintedatfurtherreleasestoenable

youtomakeyourownmusicwiththesetechnologies.Today,we’reexcitedtofollowthrough

onthatpromisebyreleasingaplayablesetofneuralsynthesizerinstruments:

AninteractiveAIExperimentmadeincollaborationwithCreativeLabthatlets

youinterpolatweenpairsofinstrumentstocreatenewsounds.

AMaxForLiveDevicethatintegratesintobothMaxMSPandAbletonLive.Itallowsyou

toexplorethespaceofNSynthsoundsthroughanintuitivegridinterface.[DOWNLOAD]

ThegoalofMagentaisnotjusttodevelopnewgenerativealgorithms,butto“closethe

creativeloop”.Wewanttoempowercreatorswithtoolsbuiltwithmachinelearningthatalso

inspirefutureresearchdirections.InsteadofusingAIintheplaceofhumancreativity,we

strivetoinfuseourtoolswithdeeperunderstandingsothattheyaremoreintuitiveand

inspiring.Wehopethattheseinstrumentsareonesmallstepinthatdirection,andwe’re

reallyexcitedtoseewhatyoumakewiththem.

FromInterpolationtoInstrument

Wealsohadagreattimedevelopingtheseinstrumentsandwantedtosharesomeofour

processinmakingacreativemusicaltooloutofagenerativealgorithm.Asaquickreminder,

theNSynthalgorithmworksbyndingacompressedrepresentationofsound(let’scallit

“z”).Inthissimplieddiagram,youcanseethatanencodernetworktransformsasoundinto

itszrepresentation.Adecodernetworkthenconvertsitbackintosound.Thewholesystem

istrainedsothatthereproducedsoundisassimilaraspossibletotherealsound.Youcan
