TheACH580andACH180seriesofvariablefrequencydrivescontaindataI/Opointscapableofbeingdiscoveredover

BACnetMS/TPasanalogvalueobjects.ThesecanbeassignedtodriveparametersrelatedtofunctionsforHVACR

applications.DrivesalreadypresentinHVACRequipmentusedtoadjustthespeedoffansorpumps,canalsobean

extensionofthebuildingautomationsystem(BAS)byprovidingendusers,engineers,ortechnicianflexibilityinthe

systemdesignorimplementation.Thistechnicalnoteoffersexamplesforusingseveraldifferenttypesofdriveinputs

andoutputsalongwithAdaptiveProgrammingtobuildcustomprogramsormanageBASsetpointssimilartothatofa

buildingcontroller.

ThesystemdesignintheseexampleswillbeusinganACH580driveasthemaincontrollerforarooftopairhandlingunit,

seeFigure1.Thedrivewillbewiredfortemperaturesensorinputsandbeprogrammedtocontrolsupplyfanspeed,

cooling,heatinganddamperoutputsaswellasreceivingsetpointscommunicatedoverBACnetMS/TP.Toseemore

systemdetailsandprogrammingofhowanACH580drivecancontrolarooftopunit(RTU),refertoABBTechnical

Note137.

InaBAS,operatorsareprovidedadjustablesetpointstooptimizetheirHVACRequipmentforenergyefficiencyand

occupantcomfort.Thedriveiscapableofreceivingsetpointsandwritingthevaluestoseveralparametersindifferent

functionssimilartoBASunitcontrollers.Thiswillbedoneusingthedrive’sAdaptiveProgramming,acustom

programmingtool.WiththisandadditionalprogrammingreferencedinTechnicalNote137,anRTUunitcontrollercould

thenbereplacedbythedrivesavinghardwarecost.AnotherbenefitofusingthedriveasthemaincontrollerforanRTU

isreducingthenumberofBACnetpointsrequiredtobediscoveredbytheBAS.Systemintegratorsmaych
