Untilrecently,theobservationintensivemethodneededforexact,veryshort-rangeforecasts,or“Nowcasts,”wasnotpossible．Thecostofequippingandoperatingmanythousandsofconventionalweatherstationswasextremelyhigh,andthedifficultiesconcernedinrapidlycollectingandprocessingtheweatherdatafromsuchanetworkwerehardtoovercome．

Fortunately,scientificandtechnologicaladvanceshaveovercomemostoftheseproblems．Radarsystemsandsatellitesareallabletomakedetailed,nearlycontinuousobservationoverlargeareasatalowercost．Communicationssatellitescansendoutdataaroundtheworldcheaplyandimmediately,andmoderncomputerscanquicklycollectandanalyzethislargeamountofweatherinformation．
