Chapter3IndustryComputerControlTechnology-Unit12OverviewofProgrammableLogicController（PLC）TextWhatisaPLC?Programmablelogiccontrollers,alsocalledprogrammablecontrollersorPLCs,aresolid-statemembersofthecomputerfamily,usingintegratedcircuitsinsteadofelectromechanicaldevicestoimplementcontrolfunctions[1].Theyarecapableofstoringinstructions,suchassequencing,timing,counting,arithmetic,datamanipulation,andcommunication,tocontrolindustrialmachinesandprocesses.

（PLC）TextProgrammablecontrollershavemanydefinitions.However,PLCscanbethoughtofinsimpletermsasindustrialcomputerswithspeciallydesignedarchitecture.Itisdesignedtoreaddigitalandanaloginputsfromvarioussensors,executeauserdefinedlogicprogram,andwritetheresultingdigitalandanalogoutputvaluestocontrolindustrialmachinesandprocesses（Fig.3.1）.NowPLCsareusedinmanydifferentindustriesandmachinessuchaspackagingandsemiconductormachines.WellknownPLCbrandsareSiemens,Allen-Bradley,ABB,Mitsubishi,Omron,andGeneralElectric.
