Abstract—Generativeartificialintelligence(AI)systemsbasedonlarge-scalepretrainedfoundationmodels(PFMs)suchas

vision-languagemodels,largelanguagemodels(LLMs),diffusionmodelsandvision-language-action(VLA)modelshave

demonstratedtheabilitytosolvecomplexandtrulynon-trivialAIproblemsinawidevarietyofdomainsandcontexts.Multimodallarge

languagemodels(MLLMs),inparticular,learnfromvastanddiversedatasources,allowingrichandnuancedrepresentationsofthe

5worldand,thereby,providingextensivecapabilities,includingtheabilitytoreason,engageinmeaningfuldialog;collaboratewith

2humansandotheragentstojointlysolvecomplexproblems;andunderstandsocialandemotionalaspectsofhumans.Despitethis

0impressivefeat,thecognitiveabilitiesofstate-of-the-artLLMstrainedonlarge-scaledatasetsarestillsuperficialandbrittle.

2Consequently,genericLLMsareseverelylimitedintheirgeneralistcapabilities.Anumberoffoundationalproblems—embodiment,

nsymbolgrounding,causalityandmemory—arerequiredtobeaddressedforLLMstoattainhuman-levelgeneralintelligence.These

aconceptsaremorealignedwithhumancognitionandprovideLLMswithinherenthuman-likecognitivepropertiesthatsupportthe
