（2024·安徽淮北·一模）TherearetwodistinctivetypesofelectricbusesmakingtheirwayalongNanjingXiLu,oneofShanghai’sbusiestroads.Thefirstisafleetofbluetrolleybusesthatservebusroutenumber20,alinesetupbyaBritish-runtransportcompanyin1928.Theyusepolestoreceiveelectricityfromwiresoverheadandhavekepttherouterunninginthiswayfornearlyacentury.ButwhilethehistoricelectricbusesareareminderofEurope’spasttechnologicalinnovation,thenewbusestravelingalongsidethemaresymbolsofChina’scontemporarynet-zeroambition.Thesemodernelectricbusespoweredbylithiumbatteries(锂电池),wereintroducedinShanghaiin2014.Theyofferasmootherride,especiallyduringstartsandstops.WidelyusedacrossChina,thesebusesarekeytothecountry’sEVtransitionandareinfluencingtheglobalshifttowardsgreentransportation.

ThemostrecentdataavailableshowsthatChinain2018wasstillthesecondlargestsourceofcarbondioxideemissionsintheglobaltransportsector,responsiblefor11%,andbehindonlytheUnitedStates,whichaccountedfor21%.Afteraroundtwodecadesofgovernmentsupport,Chinanowboaststheworld’slargestmarketfore-buses,makingupmorethan95%ofglobalstock.Attheendof2022,China’sMinistryofTransportannouncedthatmorethanthree-quarters(77%or542,600)ofallurbanbusesinthecountrywerenewenergyvehicles.Thespeedofthistransitionwasremarkable.

Sofar,however,theChinesecitieswiththemostsuccessfule-busintroduction—suchasShenzhen,BeijingandShanghai—allhavemoderateweatherandarerelativelyflat.Totakeitse-buscampaigntothenextlevel,Chinafaceschallenges.Foronething,itisdifficulttobringfleetstocitiessuchasHongKong,which—likeLondon—havedouble-deckers.Thesetwo-storeyedvehiclesare
