Hello，andthankyouforcoming.Thesubjectofthisspeechisself-image，thatis，youropinionofyourownappearance，abilities，andpersonality.Asweknow，psychologistsoftenperformexperimentstolearnmoreabouthumancharacterandbehaviour.Today，I’mgoingtotalkaboutapsychologicalexperimentfrom1991.It’scalledtheScarExperiment.

ThisexperimentwascreatedbyapsychologistcalledDrRobertKleck.First，hefoundtenvolunteersandputeachofthemintoadifferentroomwithoutmirrors.Next，hedrewanuglyfakescaroneachvolunteer’sfaceusingmake-up—thesortofmake-uptheyuseinHollywoodfilms.Thenhetookoutamirrorandshowedthevolunteerstheirscars.Next，DrKleckpretendedtoimprovethescars，butactuallyremovedthemake-up.Sothevolunteersthoughttheyhadscars，buttheydidn’t.

Afterthat，thevolunteersweretoldtogooutside，andtakenoteofhowpeoplereactedtothem.Theydidthis，andcameback.Theyallreportedthatpeoplewereruderandlesskindtothem，andthatpeoplestaredattheirscars.Asaresult，theyfeltveryuncomfortable.However，theydidn’treallyhavescars!Thevolunteersimaginedthatotherpeoplehadchangedtheirbehaviour，butactuallytheyhadnot.

Asyoucansee，there’sanimportantlessonhere.Itdoesn’tmatterhowweactuallylook—theonlythingthat’simportantishowwefeelaboutourselves.
