Energyconsumptionisahugepartofourdailylives.Weeatwithenergy.Wetravelwithenergy.Weworkwithenergyandweevenflirtwithenergy.Butwheredoesallofthisenergycomefrom?

Todaywegathermostofourenergyfromcoal,oilandnaturalgas,alsoknownasfossilfuels.Additionallywegatherenergyfrombiomass,nuclearandrenewables.

Fossilfuelsconsistofextracteddecomposedorganismsandplantsthatexistedmillionsofyearsago.Biomassconvertsplantsintobiometricmaterialstoproduceenergy.Nuclearenergyisreleasedduringnuclearfusion.Lastly,renewableenergycomesfromasourcethat’snotdepletedwhenused,suchaswindorsolarpower.

Butwhat’stheprofounddifferencebetweenthem?How(do)theyaffectourplanet?

Fossilfuelscostmorethanwhatwepayatthepumpandimpactourenvironmentinmanyways.Theseimpactsincludeglobalwarming,airqualitydeterioration,oilspillsandacidrain.It’salsoprojectedthatfossilfuelresourceswillbedepletedwithinthenext50to100years.

Biomassandnuclearenergyalsohavesimilarissues.Weneedasolutionrelativelyfastandluckilywehaveone.Renewableenergycomesfromresourceswhichnaturallyreplenishinourlifetime,whereasfossilfuelsareaone-time-useresourceinthehumantimescale.

Resourcesforrenewableenergyincludesunlight,wind,rain,tides,wavesandgeothermalheat.Thebestpartisthatwedon’tneedtocompromiseourplanettoharnessit,nordowehavetorelyonothernationsfortheseresources,whichhistoryhasshowntobeacontributortowar,famineandpoliticalinstability.Sohowdowegetthistolooklikethis?Presentlywehavethetechnologytobe100%renewablereliant.
