Inaway,Senegal’senergytransformationstartsherewithMaimounaDienepreparingafamilymealatherhomeontheoutskirtsofthecapital–Dakar.Shehasanewcookstovethatcutsherconsumptionofcharcoalinhalf.Thatsavesheranaverageof250francspermeal,whichmeansshehasmoremoneytofeedherninechildren.

Womenandtheirdependentchildrenmakeupthemajorityofthoselivinginpoverty,soenergyprogramsherearenowbeingdesignedtoincludewomeninproductiveactivitiesandleadershiproles.Thesehumblecookstoves,forinstance,aremanufacturedandsoldatareducedcost.TheyarepartofawiderefforttochangehowSenegalproducesandconsumesenergy.ThestovesareavailablethroughagovernmentenergyprojectfinancedinpartbytheWorldBank.Buyingandsellingthestovesareprovidingopportunitiesforfemaleentrepreneurs.

AndtheynotonlysavehouseholderslikeMaimounamoney.ButfarfromDarkar,theprojectisalsohelpingimprovelivesofruralwomenandhelpingprotecttheenvironment.Whileconsumersareusinglesscharcoal,producersaremakingmoremoney.That’sbecauseproductionhasbecomemoreefficientandproceeds（收益）aregoingstraighttocommunities.ThelandscapearoundSenegal’sTambacoundaregionwasoncestrippedoftreesthatwereburnedforcharcoal.Butnowtheprojecthashelpedvillagers,manyofthemwomen,toproducecharcoalasasustainableresource.Forinstance,thesecashew(腰果树)seedlingswillgrowquicklyintotrees.Deadbranchescanbetransformedintocharcoal,andthenutswillprovideadditionalincome.
