Secondly,theInternetcanmakepeopleself-centred—notthinkingofanyoneoranythingbutthemselves.Forexample,insteadofhavingproperconversationswiththeirfriends,somepeopleareonlyconcernedwiththeironlinepopularity—Howmany“likes”didIget?HowmanyfollowersdoIhave?—thoughweknowthatthenumberof“likes”orfollowerscannotcomparetohavinglong-termandrewardingfriendships.Inaddition,alotofthecontentpostedonsocialmediaisshallowortrivial.Postsaboutfunnycatimagesdonotnecessarilyhelpformmeaningfulrelationships.

Thirdly,onlinerelationshipsmaynotbewhattheyappeartobe.Friendshipsarebuiltonthebasisoftrust,andwithonlinecommunicationyoucanneverbe100percentsurethatthepeopleyouarechattingtoarebeinghonestaboutwhotheyare.Becauseofthis,goingonlinecanbeparticularlydangerousforpeoplewhoareeasilyinfluencedortootrusting.

Inmyopinion,friendsshouldfocusmoreonface-to-facecommunication,andlessononlinecommunication.Thisisthebestwaytomaintainhealthyrelationships.
