Thefirstsimple2Davatarsappearedinrole-playingcomputergamesinthe1980s.Yet,veryfewpeopleknewthatfutureavatarswouldhavesuchawidevarietyofformsanduses.Bythelate1990s,theyhadbeenusedinwebchats.

Whenpeoplestartedcreatingtheirownavatars,theydiscoveredthattheyweregoingtohavethepowertocreatenewidentitiesthatdidnotlookoractliketheirrealselvesatall.Theycoulddresstheiravatarsinfancyclothes,ortheycouldtrybeingsomeoneoftheoppositesex,andcallthemselves“Andy”insteadof“Anna”!WhenInternetusersrealisedthattheiravatarswouldbeseenbymanypeople,notjusttheirfriends,theystartedhavingmorethanoneavatar:asensibleoneforwork;afriendly,good-lookingoneformeetingpeople;andasillyoneforhavingfun.Avatarsletyouexpressyourselfandgiveyoulotsofroomforcreativity.
