ThisyearsNobelPrizeforPhysiologyorMedicinehasbeenawardedtoTu

ouyou(co-winner),1researchledtothediscoveryofartemisinin,acrucial

newtreatmentformalaria.Artemisininhassavedhundredsofthousandsoflives,and

hasledtoimprovedhealthformillionsofpeople.Over200millionpeoplearoundthe

worldgetmalariaeachyear,andabout600,000diefromit.Artemisininhasbecomea

vitalpartofthetreatmentformalaria,andisthought2(save)100,000livesayear

inAfricaalone.

Tuouyou,committedandpatientscientist,wasborninNingbo,China,on

30December1930,andgraduatedfromPekingUniversityMedicalSchoolin1955.

Aftershegraduated,sheworkedattheChinaAcademyofTraditionalChinese

MedicineinBeijing.In1967,theChinesegovernmentformedateamofscientistswith

theobjectiveofdiscoveringanewtreatmentformalaria,andTuouyouwasamong

thefirstresearchers4(choose).Inthebeginning,TuouyouwenttoHainan,

wheremalariawasmorecommon,tostudymalaria5(patient).In1969,

shebecametheheadoftheprojectinBeijing,anddecidedtoreviewancient

Chinesemedicaltextstofind6(tradition)botanicaltreatmentsforthedisease.Her

teamexaminedover2,000oldmedicaltexts,andevaluated280,000plantsfortheir

medicalproperties.Fromtheirresearch,theydiscoveredandtested380distinct

ancientChinesemedicaltreatmentsthatshowedpromiseinthefight7malaria.

Onemedicaltextfromthefourthcenturysuggestedusingtheextractfrom

sweetwormwoodtotreatafever.Tubsteamtestedacollectionofdriedwormwood

leavesbutfoundnoeffect.Theythentriedboilingfreshwormwood,andusingthe

liquid
