2.TypesofEESSsandtheirworkingprinciples

ThworkingmechanismofanyEESSreliesonaninherentpotentialdiﬀerencebetweentwo

electrodesknownastheoperatingvoltage.Theoperatingvoltageofthedeviceisdictatedbyth

diﬀerencesinredoxpotentialofthepositiveandnegativeelectrode.Thepotentialdiﬀerenceis

usedtodriveelectrochemicalreactionsoneitherelectrodewhentheyareconnectedthroughan

externalcircuit.Thiscreatesaflowofelectronsfromthnegativelectrodtothpositiv

electrode.Theflowofelectronsinducesoxidationreactionsonthenegativeelectrode(anode)

andreductionreactionsonthpositivelectrod(cathode)whendischarging.Thcharged

electrodesarebalancedbyaconcomitantflowofcounter-ions.EESSsaregroupedintoanumber

ofdiﬀerentcategoriesdependingonthecompositionoftheelectrodes,thecounter-ions,andth

natureoftheredoxreactions(Fig.1).

2.1Solidelectrodebatteries

2.1.1Metal-ionbatteryworkingprinciple.Batteriesoperatwithaconstantvoltagdefined,

approximately,bythepotentialdiﬀerencebetweentheanodeandcathode.Becauseofthis,Ina

galvanostaticcharge/dischargexperimentthpotentialofthelectrodordevicideally

remainsconstantuntilthactivmaterialhasbnfullyreduced(oxidized).Inacyclic

voltammogramexperiment,onobservesareversible,sharpredoxpeakwhenaredoxevent

occurs(insetFig.1a–c).

Metal-ionbatteriesarthmostcommontypofEESSs.Theyartypicallycomposedofan

anode(negativeelectrode),acathode(positiveelectrode),electrolyte(eitheraqueous,organic,

solid-state,18orpolymeric10,19),aseparator(topreventshortcircuiting),currentcollectors(to

collectchargeateachelectrode),andacellcasing(tokpthecomponentstogetherandprevent

exposuretotheexternalenviron
