Onepopulartheoryisthatifapersonpracticesforatleast10，000hours,theywillreach“perfection”，orbecomeanexpertintheirfield.ThistheorywasmadefamousbyMalcolmGladwellinhis2008best－sellingbook,Outliers：TheStoryofSuccess.HementionedthemusicgroupTheBeatlesandMicrosoftco－creatorBillGates.Althoughtheyallseemedtohavelotsofnaturaltalent,theyalsoclearlyputinover10，000hoursofpracticebeforetheybecamesuccessful.

Gladwell’sworkwaslargelybasedonresearchdonebyAndersEricsson,whoarguedthatGladwellmisinterpretedhisresearch.Firstly,Ericssonstatedthat10，000hourswasanaveragefigure.Somepeopleneededfarfewerthan10，000hours,andothersmanymore.Moreimportantly,Ericssonsaidthatjustpracticingalotwasnotenough;thetypeandqualityofpracticewerealsoessential.Hewentontoexplaintheimportanceof“deliberatepractice”，whichiswhenapersonpracticesaspecificpartofaskillindepthratherthanpracticingaskillasawhole.

AmorerecentstudyfromPrincetonUniversitystatedthatpracticeonlyaccountedforupto26%ofreachinganexpertlevel.Manypeoplesaythatnaturaltalenthasalargeinfluenceonbecominganexpert.Anothernaturalfactorisphysicalsuperiority,whichisespeciallyevidentinsports.IQ,personality,attitude,andstartingagearedecisive,too.Butbecominganexpertdoesn’tequalinstantsuccess,whichalsoreliesonsocialandenvironmentalfactors.

Inconclusion，practicemaynotmakeperfect，butdeliberatepracticehasbeenshowntoleadtosignificantimprovement.BasedonEricsso
