Thinkingthatthemanmightgetawaywithwhateverhewantedbeforethepolicearrived,Kevindecidedtodosomething.HerushedoutofMrs.Hill’shouseandcrossedthestreetquickly.Grabbingabranchfromacut-downtree,hejumpedinthroughthewindow.“Stoprightthere!Youmustleaverightnow!”hecalledout,holdingthebranchwithbothhands.

Themanfrozeforasecond,butwhenhesawtheskinnyboyhebreathedasighofrelief.“Hey,kid,putthatdown.Itwasmyhome.Myparentsusedtolivehereandmyfather’swatchwashere,”heexplained,tryingtoliftafloorboard.

Atthatmoment,thesoundsofapolicecarechoed(回响)intheair.Themanstoodupinapanic,thenranthroughthehousetowardthewindowandjumpedout.Kevinfollowedoutandtoldthearrivingpoliceofficerswhathadhappened.Theypursuedandarrestedtheman.

KevinwentbacktoMrs.Hill’shouse.Somehowhewasn’tsurehehaddonetherightthing.“Whatifhehastoldthetruth?”hethoughttohimself.Theman’swordssoundedprettyconvincing.
