Inthedigitalage,networkattackshavebecomeasignificantthreattoindividuals,organizations,andevennations.Astherelianceontheinternetandinterconnectedsystemsgrows,sodoesthevulnerabilitytothesemaliciousactivities.AccordingtoareportbyCybersecurityVentures,theglobalcostofcybercrimeisprojectedtoreach$10.5trillionby2025,astaggeringincreasefrom$3trillionin2015.Thissurgeincybercrimeunderscorestheurgencyofunderstandingandcombatingnetworkattacks.

Networkattacksencompassawiderangeofmaliciousactivitiesaimedatcompromisingtheconfidentiality,integrity,andavailabilityofdata.Theseattackscanbebroadlycategorizedintoseveraltypes,includingmalware,phishing,anddenial-of-service(DoS)attacks.Malware,suchasviruses,worms,andransomware,isdesignedtoinfectsystems,stealsensitiveinformation,orholddatahostage.Forinstance,theWannaCryransomwareattackin2017affectedover200,000computersacross150countries,resultinginbillionsofdollarsindamages.Phishingattacks,ontheotherhand,involvesendingfraudulentemailsormessagesthatappeartocomefromreputablesourcestodeceiveindividualsintoprovidingsensitiveinformation.The2019phishingattackontheU.S.TreasuryDepartment,whichresultedinthetheftofover$1.5million,servesasastarkreminderoftheeffectivenessofthesetactics.

Understandingthetechniquesemployedbyattackersiscrucialindevelopingeffectivedefensesagainstnetworkattacks.Onecommontechniqueistheuseofsocialengineering,whereattackersmanipulateindividualsintorevealingsensitiveinformationorperformingactionsthatcompromisesecurity.Forexample,theEquifaxdatabreachin2017wasattributedtoacombinationofsocialengineeringandasoftwarevulnerability,resultingintheexposureofpersonalinformationofover147millionpeople.Anothertechniqueistheexploitationofsoftwarevulnerabilities,whereattackerstakeadvantageofsecurityflawsinsoftwareorhardwaretogainunauthorizedaccess.The2020SolarWindsattack,whichcompromisedthenetworksofvariousgovernmentagenciesandprivatecompanies,isaprimeexampleofthistypeofattack.Itexplo
