Studentsarenotconfusedbyherlanguagechoice.Mostofthefour-year-oldswearingyellowstandupasinstructed.Thepre-schoolbilingualprogramatGatesStreetEarlyEducationCenterinLincolnHeightsispartofagrowingnumberofbilingualeducationmodelsinCaliforniaandacrossthecountry.ManyofthemaredesignedtoservestudentsfromSpanish-speakingfamilies,aswellasstudentsfromothercultures,undergrowingevidencethatlearningtwolanguagescanhelppeoplefromallbackgroundsbecomestrongerstudents.About3.8millionstudentsinUSschoolsarenativeSpanishspeakerswhoarenotgoodatEnglish.TheymakeupalargepartofaboutfivemillionstudentsnationwideidentifiedasEnglishlanguagelearners.Englishlanguagelearnersarethefastest-growingpopulationinschoolsandthelowest-performing,asjudgedbyachievementtestsand

graduationrates.Sixty-sevenpercentofstudentswithlimitedEnglishskillsgraduatedfromhighschoolafterfouryearsin2016,comparedwith84%ofallstudents.Languageexpertsrecommendhowtoimprovethesituation:morehigh-quality,long-termbilingualprogramscanclosetheachievementgapbetweenEnglishlearnersandnativeEnglishspeakersafterfivetosixyears,accordingtoresearch.Theprogramscanbehardtoputintopractice.ProblemsincludeadebateoverthebestwaytoteachEnglishlearners,shortagesofbilingualteachers,andeventhefactthatbilingualprogramsoftengrowfastestinareaswhereupper-incomepare
