    Oneofthelargestchallengesofourtimeishowtomanageincreasingpopulation

    andconsumptionwiththeearth’sfiniteresources.Howcanwedothiswhileat

    thesametimeincreasingequityanderadicatingpoverty?Sincethebeginningof

    themodernenvironmentalmovementinthe1960’s,balancinghumanneedswith

    theearth’shealthhasbeenatopicofconsiderabledebate.Areeconomic

    developmentandecosystemhealthatodds?Inordertoreconcilethisdifficult

    balance,theconceptofsustainabledevelopmentwasintroducedinthe1980’s.

    Sustainabledevelopmentisdefinedbythe1987BrundtlandReportas

    “developmentthatmeetstheneedsofthepresentwithoutcompromisingthe

    abilityoffuturegenerationstomeettheirownneeds.”Sinceitsconception,

    sustainabledevelopmenthasbecomeagoalforinternationalaidagencies,

    planners,governments,andnon-profitorganizations.Despitethis,striving

    towardsasustainablefuturehasneverbeenmoreimperative.TheUnited

    Nations(UN)predictstheworld’spopulationwilllevelat9billionpeopleby2050.

    This,coupledwithincreasedconsumption,placesasignificantstrainonthe

    earth’sfiniteresources.Understandingthattheearthisasystemthatconnects

    bothtimeandspaceiscriticaltosustainabledevelopment.Developmentmust

    focusonneeds(e.g.,reducingthevulnerabilityoftheworld’spoor)and

    limitations(e.g.,theenvironment’sabilitytodetoxifywastes).In2012,theUN

    conferenceonsustainabledevelopmentrecognizedthat:“thatpoverty

    eradication,changingunsustainableandpromotingsustainablepatternsof

    consumptionandproductionandprotectingandmanagingthenaturalresource

    baseofeconomicandsocialdevelopmentaretheoverarchingobjectivesofand

    essentialrequirementsforsustainabledevelopme
