Newresearchsuggeststhatpeoplewholiveclosetotheoceanorseaarehappier.ResearchersfromtheUniversityofExeterintheUKsaypeoplewholiveincoastalareashavebettermentalhealththanpeoplewholiveinland.Thisisforrichpeopleandpoorpeople.Theresearcherslookedatdatafromsurveysof25,963people.Thesurveysaskedpeoplequestionsabouttheirhappiness,lifestyleandincome.Theyfoundthatthosewholivewithinonekilometerofthecoastare22percentlesslikelytoshowanysignsofmentalhealthproblems.Peoplewholivedmorethan50kilometersfromthecoasthadmoresymptomsofmentalhealthproblems.Theresearchersfoundthatpoorerpeoplelivingwithinsightofthecoastwerearound40percentlesslikelytohavementalhealthsymptomsthanthosewholivedinland.

Leadresearcherofthestudy,doctorJoGarrett,said:Ourresearchsuggests,forthefirsttime,thatpeopleinpoorerhouseholdslivingclosetothecoastexperiencefewersymptomsofmentalhealthdisorders.Shesaidtheareaalongcoastsseemedtoprotectpeoplefromexperiencingmentalhealthproblems.Theyseemedtoimprovepeopleshealthandwellbeing.DrGarrettadded:Whenitcomestomentalhealth,thisprotectivezonecouldplayausefulroleinhelpingtoleveltheplayingfieldbetweenthoseonhighandlowincomes.Anotherresearcher,DrMathewWhite,said:Weneedtohelppolicymakersunderstandhowtomaximizethewellbeingbenefitsofbluespacesintownsandcities.Weneedtoensurethataccessisfairandinclusiveforeveryone,whilenotdamagingourfragilecoastalenvironments.
