ABSTRACT

Inthecontextofglobalization,culturalinteractionsamongcountrieshavebecome

increasinglyfrequent.Filmandtelevision,asmultimediaformsofcultural

communicationrichinvisual,auditory,andtextualcontents,playanimportantrolein

culturalexchange.While,subtitlesofforeignfilmscanhelpaudiencesunderstandthe

contentoftheworks.Currently,researchonsubtitletranslationinChinatendstofocus

moreonthelinguisticaspect,emphasizingtranslationtechniquesandstrategies,while

theresearchregardingmultimodalaspectssuchasvisualandauditorystillbegfurther

exploration.

ThispaperisareportonEnglish-to-Chinesetranslation,derivedfromthe

Americandocumentarypublishedin2015,GTFO.Thedocumentarytouchesontopics

relatedtoFeminism,Gamingindustry,andhasstrongpracticalsignificance,butthese

discussionsarerelativelyrareinChina.Italsocontainsvariousdifferentmodelssuch

asvisualimages,sound,andtext.Giventhat,theMultimodalDiscourseAnalysis

Theorywasadopted,alongwiththeprinciplesofsubtitletranslationtohelpproducea

refinedversionofthetargetsubtitle.Aftertheanalysisofthetranslationpractice,the

authorsummarizesthecopingstrategiesforencountereddifficultiesduringthepractice:

forthetemporalandspatialconstraintsofsubtitletranslation,flexibletranslation

strategiessuchasomissionandcondensationcanbeadopted;forterminologyrelated

contentincludingself-identity,womenempowerment,methodslikedirecttranslation

andborrowingcanbeused;forthesynchronizationoftextsinsubtitlesandmouthshape

ofthecharacter,techniquessuchassentencerestructuringandflexiblewordchoosing

canbeemployed,withtheultimategoalofachievingthebestvisualandtextualoutput.
