Namedinthemiddleofthe19thcenturybytheGermanscholar，BaronFerdinandvonRichthofen，theSilkRoad，whichisregardedasthegreatestEast-Westtraderoute,wasfirsttraveledbyzhangQianwhenhewassentonadiplomaticmissiontotheWesternRegionsintheHandynasty(206BC—AD220）.TheSilkRoadwastheinformationsuperhighwayofitsage，servingastheconduitnotonlyforgoodsbutalsoforthetransmissionofknowledgeandideasbetweeneastandwest。

TheHan—DynastySilkRoadbeganatthemagnificentcapitalcityofChangan(today’sXi’an）.TheroutetooktraderswestwardsintoGansuProvincethroughLanzhou，Tianshui，Zhangye,JiuquanalongtheHexiCorridorreachedJiayuguan-thegiantbarrieroftheGreatWallandthefirstkeypointoftheroute-Dunhuang.DunhuangisinthewestendoftheHexiCorridorofGansuProvince.Itisoneofthewell-knownChinesehistoricalandculturalcities，andthebrightpearlontheancient
