ABSTRACT

InlightofthefactthatshortvideoplatformsrepresentedbyTikTokhaverapidly

emergedandspreadanextensiveinfluenceallovertheworldinrecentyears,thepresent

reportisbasedonaselectionoftennewsitemsaboutTikTokfromNewYorkTimesas

atranslationpracticumproject.Withintheframeworkoftheforegroundingtheory,it

analyzesthestylisticfeaturesofthesampletextsfromNewYorkTimesandconducts

qualitativeandquantitativeanalysesofthemsoastolayatheoreticalgroundingforthe

English-Chinesetranslationpracticetask.Inthetranslationprocessoftheabovenews

texts,thetranslatorusedimitationtechniquestoensurebothfidelityandreadabilityof

thetranslationandadoptedinterpretativetranslationtoreconstructthecorecontentof

theoriginaltext,followedbytheintegrationofanewforegroundingframeworkforthe

purposeofclarity.

Thistranslationpracticeprojectindicatesthatwhentranslatingarticlesfrom

foreignmedialikeNewYorkTimes,onemustrecognizetheculturalandcognitive

differencesbetweenChinaandtheWest.Additionally,understandingthevaluesof

differentmediainstitutionsisalsoacrucialfactorinmakingtranslationchoicesatthe

levelsoflexis,structure,meaning,andstyle.Specifically,byemphasizinglexicaland

syntacticparallelisms,aswellasemployingtechniquessuchasculturallocalization,

adaptingidiomaticexpressions,andensuringcontextualappropriateness,theexpected

communicativeeffectofChinesetranslationsofforeignnewsismostlikelytobe

enhanced.Insummary,effectiveuseoftheforegroundingtheoryisconducivetothe

qualityofnewstexttranslation,thusservingasaviableframeofreferenceforfuture

researchandpracticeinthedomainoftranslationandinternationalcommunication.
