TextAinthisunitmakesananalysisofthegreatinfluenceandsignificanceof

themassiveimmigrationfromEasternandSouthernEuropetoAmericaingivingrise

toAmericanpopculture.Specificallyspeaking,thetextfocusesonthreeaspects,

namely,folkloreandpopculture,popculturevs.traditionalculture,andpopculture

andthetyrannyofpresentism,toillustratethecloseanddirectrelationshipbetween

theimmigrationandAmericanpopculture.

Everyday,individualsmakejudgmentsaboutothersbasedonraceorethnicity,

gender,disabilities,class,age,etc.Thesejudgments,whetherfairorunfair,accurate

orinaccurate,arebasedoninformationgatherednotonlyoveryearsofexperience

andinteractionswithfamily,friends,andothersocialnetworks,butalsofromthe

constantbombardmentofmediaimagesandmessages.Researchhasshownthatmass

mediaandpopularculturehaveplayedanimportantroleinshapingindividuals’

perceptionsandfeelingsaboutthemselvesandaboutothers.Concerningthis,TextB

inthisunitexploresthepatternsofrepresentationsofindividualsandsocialgroupsin

Americanmassmediaandpopularculture.Asthetexthasclearlypresentedtous,

thereexistsahierarchyinmassmediarepresentations,inwhichCaucasian,

waysastosuggestthattheyarebelow,ornotasimportantas,thedominantgroupsin

society.Besides,thetextalsomakesananalysisoftheunderlyingreasonsforthese

patternsofrepresentationinmassmediaandpopculture.
