Chapter2TheAnglo-NormanPeriod(1066—1350)LiteratureofThisPeriodTheNormanConquestbroughtalinguisticshocktotheAnglo-Saxons.Anglo-Saxonspeechsimplifieditselfbydroppingoffitsinflections,absorbedalargepartoftheFrenchvocabulary,andbecametheEnglishlanguage.TheliteraturetheNormansbroughttoEnglandwascharacterisedbyitsromanticlovestoriesandadventurestories,inmarkedcontrastwiththestrengthandsombernessofAnglo-Saxonpoetry.

Chapter2TheAnglo-NormanPeriod(1066—1350)LiteratureofThisPeriodTheNormanConquestleftthreechiefeffectsinEnglishliterature,namely,theintroductionofRomancivilisationtoEngland;thegrowthofnationality,i.e.astrongcentralisedgovernment,insteadofthelooseunionofSaxontribes;thenewlanguageandliterature,representedespeciallybyChaucer.Intheliteratureofthisperiod,intermsofmattersthereweremainlythreeclasses:(a)thematterofFrance;(b)thematterofGreeceandRome;(c)thematterofBritain.
