Chapter8WalterRaleighLifeandWorksSirWalterRaleigh(1552–1618)asoldier,courtier,poet,philosopher,explorerandcoloniser,historianandstudentofsciencethefounderofVirginiaandtheintroduceroftobaccointoEuropepursuedthestyleofconciseness,thinkingofpoetryasanelaborateandgracefulart,andwritingforamusementHisreplytoChristopherMarlowe’s“ThePassionateShepherdtoHisLove”wasoneofsuchpoems.His“Farewell,FalseLove”wasanearlypoemwhichwassettomusicbythecomposerWilliamByrd.

From1603to1618,RaleighwasimprisonedintheTowerofLondonbyKingJames,exceptforaperiodin1617whenhemadehisill-fatedlastvoyagetoGuiana.HistoryoftheWorldwaswritteninprison.In1618,hewasexecutedinordertopleasetheSpanishwhomRaleighoffendedonhislastvoyage.Chapter8WalterRaleighLifeandWorks

Chapter8WalterRaleighBriefCommentInstyle,Raleigh’spoetryisstraightforward,unornamentedandplain.HewasoneofthepoetswhorefusedtheinfluenceofItalianRenaissanceandrefusedtouseclassicalreferenceandelaboratepoeticdevices.HiscontemptoftheworldwasshowninhisattitudemorecharacteristicoftheMiddleAgesthanofthedawningeraofhumanisticoptimism.Thisattitudecanbeseeninhispoemssuchas“WhatIsOurLife”and“TheLie”.HealsocombinedthisveinwiththemoreelaborateconceitsassociatedwithhiscontemporariessuchasEdmundSpenserandJohnDonne,expressingamelancholysenseofhistory.
