Chapter28OliverGoldsmithLifeandWorksOliverGoldsmith(1730–1774)HewasbornintoanIrishfamily,thesonofanAnglicanclergymanwhosegenialityheinheritedandwhoseimprovidenceheimitated.Hewasearlydisfiguredbysmallpox.HewassenttoTrinityCollege,Dublin,asasizar—i.e.astudentwhodidmenialjobsforwell-to-doundergraduates—andtherehetookhisBAin1749.Afterseveralfalsestartsinchoosingacareer,hewassentbyagenerousuncletostudymedicineattheUniversityofEdinburgh.
InEdinburghforacoupleofyearshebecameapopularsingerandstory-teller.Insteadoftakingadegree,hewanderedforawhileontheContinentvisitingHolland,France,ItalyandSwitzerland,likeacheerfulbeggar,singingandplayinghisfluteforfoodandlodging.AfterayearormoreofvagabondagehereturnedtoLondonin1756.HetriedinvaintosupporthimselfasaphysicianamongthepoorintheboroughofSouthwark.Afterservingforawhileasanusherinaschool,hedriftedintotheprofessionofahackwriter.In1759hepublishedhisfirstoriginalbookAnEnquiryIntothePresentStateofPoliteLearninginEurope,inwhichhemadeasurveyoftheculturalstateofthecountriesofEurope,fromancienttimesthroughthemiddleagestothe18thcenturyinFrance,Hollan
