ABSTRACT

DiscourseMarker(hereafterabbreviatedasDM)isanotionthatemergedfrom

logicalconnectives,hasnotonlybeenextensivelyexploredbypragmaticslinguistsbut

alsoisincreasinglygarneringattentionfrominterpretingtraineesandresearchersalike.

Ontheonehand,DMsplayasignificantroleinfacilitatingcommunicationand

achievingdiscoursecoherenceinverbalcommunication.Ontheotherhand,the

appropriateuseofDMsisessentialforinterpreters,whichcanhelpclarifythelogical

relationshipbetweenpropositionsinthesourcediscourse,enablinginterpreterstobetter

understandthespeaker’sintentionandaccuratelyconveythecoreinformationinthe

targetdiscourse.Effectivecommunicationbetweenthespeakerofthesourcelanguage

(hereafterabbreviatedasSL)andthelistenerofthetargetlanguage(hereafter

abbreviatedasTL)istherebyfacilitatedbythis.

Thestudyinvited15MTIstudentsfromGuangdongUniversityofForeignStudies

toparticipateintheexperimentinwhichtheytookaconsecutiveinterpretingfrom

ChinesetoEnglish(hereafterabbreviatedasC-ECI).Thepresentstudyisaimedat

findingouthowMTIinterpreter’scompetencetodealwithDMsinfluencethequality

ofC-ECI.Basedontheexperimentaldata,thispapersummarizesthetechniquesuses

byMTIinterpreterstorenderDMsandputsforwardsuggestionsforimprovingthe

qualityofinterpretingfromtheperspectiveofDMs.Inthepresentstudy,threeresearch

questionshavebeenformulatedtoaidinaccomplishingtheaforementionedobjective.
