Overview

Fromthisuniton,weareturningoureyestotheinterfacebetweenlanguageandculture.Tostartwith,wewilldealwiththetopicoflanguageandgenderinthisunit.

TextAdiscusseswhethermenandwomentalkdifferently.Insteadofattemptingananswertothequestion,Napolichallengessixcommonclaimswithmorequestions,arguingthatallsixclaimsaremoreaboutsociologicalfactorsthanlinguisticones.Thenshehighlightstheimportancetodistinguishbetweengenderandsexandsuggeststhewiderangeofsociologicalfactorsthathavetobeincludedinsystematicsociolinguisticstudiestohaveachanceofgettingreliableresults.

the“unmarked”lookofthemenparticipants.Itoccurredtoherthatthewomendidnothavetheoptionofbeingunmarkedintheirappearanceasthemenhad.Similarly,womenarealwaysmarkedinlanguageasindicatedinthetitlesandsurnames.Thisisstrangebecausebiologicallyitisthemalethatismarked.YetevenwritingaboutwomenandmenmaymarkTannenasafeministratherthanawriter.

Thisunitmayserveasastartingpointforfurtherstudiesinlanguageandgender.Followingtheexampleofthetexts,studentsareinvitedtoreexaminethebeliefsandphenomenathatareusuallytakenforgranted.Inthisprocess,theymaynotonlywanttobreakdownsomestereotypesbutalsopracticethesystematicwaytodoso.
