UnitOverview

Devianceisanybehaviorthatviolatesculturalnorms.Devianceisoftendividedintotwotypesofdeviantactivities.Thefirst,crimeistheviolationofformallyenactedlawsandisreferredtoasformaldeviance.Examplesofformaldeviancewouldinclude:robbery,theft,rape,murder,andassault,justtonameafew.Thesecondtypeofdeviantbehaviorreferstoviolationsofinformalsocialnorms,normsthathavenotbeencodifiedintolaw,andisreferredtoasinformaldeviance.Examplesofinformaldeviancemightinclude:pickingonesnose,belchingloudly(insomecultures),standingtooclosetoanotherunnecessarily(insomecultures)andhomosexualbehavior(again,insomecultures).

Asthelasttwoexamplesintheprecedingparagraphillustrate,deviancecanvaryquitedramaticallyfromculturetoculture.Culturalnormsarerelative;thismakesdeviantbehaviorrelativeaswell.Sociologicalinterestindevianceincludesbothinterestsinmeasuringformaldeviance(statisticsofcriminalbehavior)andanumberoftheoriesthattrytoexplainboththeroleofdevianceinsocietyanditsorigins.
