Inelectrophysiologicaloutcomes:Experiment1foundthatusingcognitive

reappraisalstrategiestodown-regulatenegativeemotionsresultedinagreaterchange

inLPPamplitudecomparedtoup-regulatingpositiveemotions,andthatdown-

regulationofnegativeemotionsoccurredearlierthanup-regulationofpositive

emotions.Additionally,comparedtohealthyindividuals,individualswithdepressive

tendenciesshowedasignificantlylowerLPPamplitudechangewhenusingcognitive

reappraisalstrategies.Experiment2foundthatusingcognitivereappraisalstrategiesto

up-regulatepositiveemotionsresultedinagreaterLPPamplitudechangecomparedto

savoringstrategies,butsavoringwasmoreefficientintermsoftemporalprogression

andoccurredearlier;furthermore,comparedtohealthyindividuals,individualswith

depressivetendenciesalsoshowedasignificantlylowerLPPamplitudechangewhen

up-regulatingpositiveemotions.

Insummary,theresultsofbothexperimentssuggestthatalthoughtheemotional

regulationabilitiesofindividualswithdepressionareimpairedandtheyrarelyuse

appropriatestrategiesforeffectiveemotionalregulation,thisstudyconfirmsthat

individualswithdepressivetendencieswhodonotmeetclinicaldepressiondiagnosis

canstillusecognitivereappraisalandsavoringstrategiestoregulatenegativeand

positiveemotionsunderguidance.ThisstudyfurthersupportsGrosssmodelof

emotionalregulationprocessesfromacognitiveperspectiveandalsosupplements

previoussingularargumentsregardingtheuseofemotionalregulationstrategiestoup-

regulatepositiveemotions.
