ABSTRACT

Duetothediversityoflanguagestructures,therearevariousdifferencesamong

differentlanguages.Forexample,Englishismoreofahypotaxis-prominentlanguage,

whileChineseismoreofaparataxis-prominentlanguage.Thestructuraldifferences

betweenEnglishandChineseresultindifferencesincohesivedeviceswhichaffect

theflowofdiscourse.Therefore,properlydealingwiththedifferentcohesivedevices

betweenEnglishandChinesediscourseiscrucialforimprovingthequalityof

translation.

ThisreportselectsFinancialFeministasthetranslationobject,andusesthe

cohesiontheoryproposedbyHallidayandHasantoguidethistranslationpractice.

Thisreportconductscasestudiesondiscoursecoherenceissuesbasedonreferencing,

substitution,ellipsis,andconjunction,integratingthechallengesencounteredbythe

translatorintranslationpractice,thendiscussestheappropriatetranslationstrategies

andmethodsaccordingtothedifferencesbetweenEnglishandChinese.

Throughthistranslationpractice,thetranslatorfindsthatdiscoursecohesioncan

beachievedinthefollowingthreeways:first,bysupplementingtheinformationthat

isomittedorimplicitlystatedinthesourcetext;second,byadjustingthewordorder

tomakethetranslationmoreinlinewiththeChineseexpressionhabits;third,by

retainingcohesivedevicesinthesourcetextthatservesimilarfunctionsasthosein

Chinese.
