In2012,CheboireceivedascholarshiptoCollegeinIllinoisthatchangedher
life.ShegrewupinpovertyinruralKenya,watchinghermotherstruggletosupport
herfamilyalone.CheboihadnoexperiencewithcomputersbeforemovingtotheUS
tostudy.Shehandwrotepapersandthenstruggledtotypethemoutonalaptop
computer.Somehowshefellinlovewithcomputerscienceandbeganacareerinthe
field.Butshedidnotlosesightofherorigins.“Asanundergraduate,Iinvested
allofmyincomefromvariouscampusjobsintomycommunitybackinKenya，”she
saidontheTechLitAfricawebsite.Butsoonshewantedtodomoreforitandthat
ishowTechLitAfricabegan.

withtheideaofbringingcomputerscienceaspartofkidscurriculumgrowingup.
Butshefoundthatitwasgoingtobereallyhardtoimpactasmanypeopleaspossible,
becauseitwassohardtoraisefund.Theninordertoreachmorestudents,she
introducedcomputertrainingtoexistingschools.Cheboiphysicallydraggedover
40recycledcomputersthathadbeendonatedtothembyvarioustechcompaniesto
Kenyainsuitcases.
Now,sincethenonprofithasgrown,itworkswithvariouscompaniesthathelp
themcleanthedonatedcomputersofdataandsendthemtoAfrica.TechLitAfrica
runsitsowncurriculumwithitsownsoft
