growth.Thecitycontinuestoprovidetheprimesocio-spatialcontextwithinwhich

ofdisinvestment,fiscalcrisis,andinnercity“renaissance.”Inrecentyears,scholars

havebeguntostudyredevelopmentwithaneyetowardclarifyingthelinksbetween

macrostructuralprocesses,specificurbanredevelopmentefforts,andlocallylived

realities.Thisreviewissuewillthereforeconsiderthesignificanceofurban

redevelopmentasafocusforurbantheoryandurbanresearch,outliningwhatsuch

theoreticalandmethodologicalcontributionsandchangesmaymeanforthefutureof

urbanscholarship.Thestudyofcities,urbanism,andurbanchange–redevelopment,

disinvestment,andsoon–hasarichtraditioninurbanscholarship.Europeanssuchas

MarxandEngels,Weber,andSimmeldevotedmuchthoughttotheimportanceofthe

city,forexample,asaseatoftheemergingcapitalisteconomy,asitepoliticaland

neighborhoodracialsuccession,andethnicandracialgroup“adaptation”totheurban

commentedoncommunitystructureandlocalinstitutions,oftendrawinganalogiesto
